In the cannon you show the breech block is inserted making it a complete gun. The breech block is loaded from the muzzle end. A Ferguson is a good example as a breech loader the ball is inserted into the breech then the powder. IMO, .44s are ungainly and overly heavy. While .36s are svelte and graceful... On top of all that, .36s are also more economical to shoot. I saw somebody use corn meal instead of wadding in their flintlock shotgun on YouTube. He claimed it made the groups 50% better.The Hawken and Renegade are advertised as being .500 bore with .006" grooves. This gives you a total space of .512" that you need to work off of. Subtract the .490 ball and this means you need to make up .022" of space. You would have to check with Chambers to see if they had a suitable replacement. Russ worked 3rd shift at a GM plant. Whatever metal the plant was casting is what he used. Make the 10% or up to 25% solution, add iron shavings or small nails, let it cook uncovered until it is done consuming iron. There is an adjustment screw in the front of the grip. With it completely out it is still a little heavy to cock. Dixie sells these main springs for less than $5.00 dollars each.Here is how to do that. Cut the slot just deep enough so the bottom of the base of the lug can be flat and fit on a flat surface on the barrel.
